A prime lens is a lens with a single fixed focal length. Because it doesn’t zoom, you frame your shot by moving closer or farther from the subject or by changing your position, rather than by changing focal length. Prime lenses often offer brighter maximum apertures, which helps in low light and for shallow depth of field, and they’re typically lighter and optically sharp. The term “Fixed Focal Length” is just a descriptive label and not the standard term used; a zoom lens, by contrast, has a range of focal lengths to change framing without moving. White Balance has to do with color temperature, not how a lens changes focal length.
